IPE Ltd successfully completes BBC Television Centre (TVC) Refurbishment of Studio 1

IPE Ltd, UK based radio and audio systems specialists recently completed a project to re-equip the Sound Control Gallery in Studio 1 at BBC Television Centre.

IPE provided systems integration expertise for a new digital sound desk and a sophisticated communication system with networked Radio Talkback capable of working with adjacent studios.

The project included complete rewiring of the Sound Control Room (SCR), and facilities on the Studio floor, Production Control Room, Production Office, Editor Booth, Maintenance room, Studio Observation room, Gantry and Television Centre Central Control Area (CCA).

The Studio, which is one of the largest in the UK, is used for regular weekly programs such as Jules Holland and Strictly Come Dancing as well as for specials like Children in Need and election programs.

The project included Systems integration and interfacing of the following equipment:

  • Studer Vista 8 (72 Faders, 520 inputs, 480 outputs) – audio mixing
  • ProBel Sirius AES Router
  • Drake 4000 series Talkback System with custom panels
  • 56 track Pyramix Disc recorder
  • Akai DA88, DD1500 & DL1500 8 track recorders.

John Chalmers, IPE’s Managing Director said "The project was notable for its extremely tight time scale in that only a three week window was possible from the start of on-site installation until the start of customer acceptance. This could only be achieved by extensive off-site pre-wiring (there were over 100 rows of jacks!) and detailed planning. This SCR has more equipment and more cable terminations in it than any other room we have ever built."
