IPE Ltd successfully completes the First Phase of BBC Radio Cleveland refurbishment.
Due for final completion in spring 2007, IPE have successfully completed the first phase of a refurbishment project for BBC Radio Cleveland based in Middlesbrough.
The first phase included the supply and installation of a new Central Technical Area (CTA), an on-air studio and an operations room. The station will go live in October 2006.
BBC Cleveland is being refurbished at its existing site in Newport Road Middlesbrough which has to remain on-air throughout. A multi-phase plan was therefore necessary, which was made additionally interesting by its location as it is surrounded on all sides by busy roads.
The project included the migration of the station main infrastructure from old MK3 CTA/server room and associated systems to the new CTA. These included external circuits/lines, Radioman playout system and servers, BNCS (Colledia) control systems, as well as telephony and security systems (by others).
The existing on-air studios are over twenty years old, so have no central routers, relying instead on paralleling of incoming circuits and transmission interlocks between cubicles. A temporary newsroom and News Preparation Area (NPA) were installed, together with a ‘fallback’ on-air studio based around a Sonifex digital mixer.
Once the station goes live, the refurbishment will continue by stripping out the remaining studios in readiness for the next phase of building work to start. IPE will return in December to install the Newsroom, and in January to install the second on-air studio and to relocate the temporary NPA to its final location.
