IPE Ltd successfully completes BBC Radio 1 Transmission Studio Refurbishment

IPE Ltd, UK based radio and audio systems specialists recently completed stage 4 of a prestigious project to refurbish the BBC Radio 1 Production Studios in Yalding House London.

IPE provided systems integration for new digital sound mixing desks, associated recording, replay, effects, communication and monitoring equipment, primarily used for the transmission of radio programmes and housed in height-adjustable table surfaces.

The project included installations in three Radio 1 Studios, the adjacent "Live Lounge" area used for live music performance and production support, plus technical and transmission apparatus rooms.

The new facilities allow:

  • Operation, control and monitoring for the Radio 1 national network
  • Presentation of live music shows (self op mode), continuity and management of links and news inserts into the programme from the studio
  • Transmission of material from a variety of sources including VCS playout server
  • Broadcasting or recording of live performances from the adjacent "Live Lounge area"
  • Pre-recording of inserts or trails, and editing of pre-recorded material.

The project included Systems integration and interfacing of the following equipment:

  • DHD 4200 - audio mixing
  • VCS Dira!–playout system
  • VCS Medianet – editing and scheduling
  • Colledia (formerly BNCS) – Control and monitoring
  • SADiE – multitrack digital audio editor.

John Chalmers, IPE’s Managing Director said "The interesting feature of this project was that at least two studios had to be kept fully operational at all times during the refurbishment; it was therefore necessary split the project into several phases of civil works and technical build. The end result is a credit to the BBC’s and IPE’s designers."
